The NEWF Fellows Summit is more than an event; it is the heartbeat of our year. It is a closed, sanctuary-like space designed specifically for our cohort of African storytellers, scientists, and conservationists to gather, breathe, and build together.

Rooted in our Africa Refocused theory of change, the Summit is built on a simple yet bold belief: when talented African creators are provided with the right training, mentorship, and access, they don’t just enter the industry—they lead it. Here, we move beyond the technical to the transformational. We explore the ethics of our craft, dive deep into collaborative production, and sharpen the narratives that will protect our continent’s natural history for generations to come.

As we gather to celebrate our collective agency, we invite our Fellows to use this time to reflect, re-imagine, and prepare to take up space. The stories of Africa belong to those who call it home.

NEWF FELLOWS SUMMIT COMMUNITY GUIDELINE &

\ CODE OF ETHICS /

By interacting in this community, you agree to NEWF’s Guiding Principles: NEWF is an Afro-centric, multicultural, Pan African organisation, committed to diversity, equity and inclusion embracing all cultures, identities and abilities.

At NEWF and by extension, Africa Refocused, we aim to encourage an environment that fosters a professional, collaborative, creative, and innovative exchange of ideas and perspectives. Our Community Standards are designed to ensure that our events reflect our commitment to create a welcoming and safe community for all. These community standards apply to all attendees, employees, speakers, sponsors, volunteers, and other guests and participants attending NEWF events and convenings.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:

Be thoughtful and inclusive in your interactions with others - Take accountability for your actions and engage with others in a manner that is honest, fair, and transparent.  Respect the diversity of our community by being open to feedback, and striving to understand different perspectives.

  • Be collegial and professional - Follow the rules of the event as set forth by NEWF and NEWF staff, including registration procedures, event protocols, venue restrictions, safety and security controls, etc.

  • Report prohibited behaviour - Promptly report to NEWF Executive Management (contact information below) any prohibited conduct or behaviour laid out below, or any other behaviour that makes you or others feel uncomfortable.

prohibited conduct or behaviour:

  • Harassment, intimidation, and discrimination of any kind are not tolerated at NEWF events. Harassment can take many forms including, but not limited to, slurs, jokes, banter, offensive comments, unwanted compliments, inappropriate or overly personal questions, inappropriate touching, or invading personal space. Unwanted or offensive communication through email, text, social media, or other platforms is also prohibited.

  • What may seem acceptable to one person could be offensive to another, so keep all interactions professional and respectful. Harassment, even if meant as a joke, is unacceptable.

  • Attending sessions you are not registered for, or inviting unregistered guests, is prohibited.

  • If alcohol is served, individuals who are of legal drinking age according to the laws of the country where the event or convening is held may consume it. All participants are expected to drink responsibly and excessive consumption is prohibited.

\ Reporting & adressing violations /

If you see, experience, or become aware of prohibited or inappropriate behaviour, please seek out NEWF Executive Management (Pragna or Noel) to report your concern. You may also report a concern by completing this form. We will privately and promptly review and appropriately address all reports and maintain confidentiality to the extent possible under the circumstances. While you may make anonymous reports, we encourage reporters to identify themselves and give as many details as possible, as anonymous reports may greatly limit our ability to fully investigate.

Prohibited conduct will not be tolerated. If you are asked to stop behaving inappropriately, you should comply immediately. NEWF may take any action we consider appropriate, including, but not limited to, issuing a warning, removing attendees from the event, barring or limiting access from future NEWF events and opportunities, revoking Fellow status or titles, if applicable, and/or referring the matter to law enforcement.

You agree not to make or bring any such claim against NEWF Releasees, and forever release and discharge NEWF Releasees from liability under such claims. You acknowledge that NEWF Releasees are not liable for any medical expenses incurred while participating, except for those directly caused by and arising out of the gross negligence or willful misconduct of NEWF Releasees.  You also hereby understand and agree that NEWF Releasees may take photographs, videotapes, and other recordings, and/or may make public reference to your participation, which may include your name, image, voice and likeness (the “Likeness”). You hereby authorise NEWF Releasees to use your Likeness as captured within the scope of the event, in any and all manner and media, in perpetuity, worldwide, without compensation to you, and you hereby release NEWF Releasees from any liability on account of such usage.
